The bagpipe, the national instrument of Scotland, did not originate in Scotland. Bagpipes were known in Persia in ancient times, and actually their antiquity has been traced back to ancient Mesopotamia.

Provided they're played properly, drums & bagpipes must be ranked among the most primal of instruments. I once heard a CD of Albanian folk music (their dance music, really) that featured a drum, bagpipes, & a violin-like instrument that made my hair stand on end.

I think all instruments have the capability to be hair raising and beautiful.

I agree! They've just got to be played appropriately...

By primal I mean kind of visceral-- expressing raw emotion-- that sort of thing. The kind of music where the heart precedes the brain.

"Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and kiss..." - J Hendrix

It's cool that you play. Brass instruments are hard to master.
