The bagpipe, the national instrument of Scotland, did not originate in Scotland. Bagpipes were known in Persia in ancient times, and actually their antiquity has been traced back to ancient Mesopotamia.

Wow. Drum kit being the best instrument in the world?

I'll go with violin or trumpet.

Provided they're played properly, drums & bagpipes must be ranked among the most primal of instruments. I once heard a CD of Albanian folk music (their dance music, really) that featured a drum, bagpipes, & a violin-like instrument that made my hair stand on end.

I think all instruments have the capability to be hair raising and beautiful.

I agree! They've just got to be played appropriately...

By primal I mean kind of visceral-- expressing raw emotion-- that sort of thing. The kind of music where the heart precedes the brain.

"Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and kiss..." - J Hendrix

It's cool that you play. Brass instruments are hard to master.

Why violin and trumpet?

They're the two I play, and I happen to think that bot the trumpet and it's varians (flugelhorn, etc) and the violin make in my opinion the most beautiful music.

Did you have years of piano first? They usually do that now from a band perspective. I was just curious.
