To treat infections, the early Chinese used moldy soybean curds, the Mayans used cuxum fungi, while the Egyptians used yeast from sweet beer. A seventeenth century English recipe for an anti infection unguent even called for “moss from dead men’s skulls”.

another treatment for the insane (i believe in egypt? unsure, but that sounds correct) was to throw the victims into a snake pit.

hence that old black & white movie, "the snake pit."

..yes. apparently it would "shock" the victims back into sanity.
