[mood |crampy]
[music |A baseball game i don't want to watch]

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 Billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300C.

The Russians simply used a pencil.

That is great, it's a way of flaunting the power and worth of the Americans and the American nation. Take that Russia!

I see why they could want a pen that does that, I am a BIG fan of pens and I absolutely loathe writing with pencils, they are so dirty, cheap, and have a disgusting feel when you use them.

A disgusting enough feeling to condone 12 billion of government spending to make a pen? *raises a brow*

You should definitely run for public office. You sound like you'd fit right in.

My dad has one of those pens. He thinks it's hilarious.
I have no preferance between pens and pencils but I demand high quality in either.

I wouldn't spend twelve billion on one. ;)

I bet it's an awesome pen, but I think I saw a Seinfeld episode about it.

I have one... Yes indeed... You never know when you'll have to write on glass upside down under water :p

I just want to know if the bigwigs thought of pencil and ruled it out or if they never thought of it.
Personally, I prefer writing w/ pencil because my handwriting looks better. But, I use pen because it doesn't fade like pencil. Go look back at old papers or an old diary from childhood..I hope you used pen.

A good point. I looked at some drawings I did. All faded pretty much, because everyone always told me to draw in pencil. ;)

First of all, that's not really true. Here is the snopes article.

Second of all, writing with pencil in zero gravity has some problems, like all the little bits of graphite going everywhere. They don't just fall to the ground, they float into the instruments and clog things up.

That's interesting. I got mine from a fact book, copyright 2002. I'll have to see if I can find it again. I've seen quite a few things that have been UNvalidated by Snopes. On some of those fact or fiction shows.

I suppose they could have inflated it for the current economy when the book came out?

Regardless, that's a pretty ridiculous amount of money to spend on a pen.

I wonder how many people could eat on that kind of money. Even without inflation.

ooo... sorry about the cramps, hon

I wonder what kind of advances this pen brought though. Like the mars rover missions helped with a lot of robotics research. Also, the orignal moon missions helped with materials science research.

That's a good point. It would be interesting to discover.

Yeah, me too. I couldn't find my birth control pills.. and so when I did... I took the three I had missed at once.

Apparently... not SUCH a good idea.
