I couldn't do it. Could you? [Jun. 20th, 2005|10:57 am]

Buddhists have no order of authority in their religion. A Buddhist monk who follows the religion strictly lives alone in a monastery with these few possessions: a robe, an alms bowl ( to beg for food), a needle, a string of 108 beads (to count while meditating), a razor (To shave his head), and a filter (to strain insects from his drinking water).

I would give up the first day.

Imagine no:
caffiene, shampoo, interweb, toliet, contact drops, or toothpaste.

I would be one bitchy monk, too. ;)

I could do it. Holds great attraction for me, but then I'd never met you great people. Now, no way! I'm addicted to the computer and could never abandon my angel.

Re: pre my baby girl

As am I. I think there was one point in my life I could have done it, but certainly no more.

Well, there's a difference between being a Buddhist MONK and eing a buddhist. Just like there's supposed to be a diff. between your average Catholic and a Catholic priest. I myself, am a Hinduist-sort of. I don't believe in organized religion, but I take a liking tword a lot of Hinduist values.

You're with your analogy of a catholic and a priest. A priest wields power over a catholic, a monk stives to avoid any power over other people.

Values like the caste system?

I imagine the monks are pretty self-reliant.

It's amazing what you can do without when you put your mind to it. I, personally, would lack the self-control for such a path but I can imagine how others might find it to be just what they were looking for.
Being a monk is like being a priest, it's a calling.
Occasionally, it's what you turn to when you have nothing else, but that's just getting into a romanticized version of things with former assassins seeking refuge in monastaries and so forth.
