Women of the 1600s, from queens to prostitutes, commonly exposed one or both breasts in public and in the popular media of the day, according to a study of fashion, portraits, prints, and thousands of woodcuts from 17th-century ballads.

LOL. You think so?

Or is that just the American view?

Is that what society has taught us? That to show yourself naked makes you in someway a slut, or a skank?

One must wonder why old traditions die. I think there are a few I wouldn't mind having back in place. ;-)

That's still true today in many societies. Let's not be ethnocentric. I think the Bible and the Koran have done a lot of damage (as well as some good, too).

The Bible and Koran do bad or good depending on how one interprets the them.
May I refer you to the Song of Songs?

Wasn't it during this same time period that women weren't allowed to publicly perform? Castrated men sang in the church choirs, and men performed the female roles in plays. (or am I thinking of 100 years later or even a different culture?)

i go topless even now! breasts weren't made to be sexualized. they were made to serve the single purpose of feeding our young. it is only in the past few hundreds of years that our western societies have sexualized the breast. and in doing so, we have started to influence other cultures to do so as well, making the world a bunch of prude little girls. hehe.

Hey, I think the sexualization of the breast has been great.

Most women have a lot of nerves up there, too.

One of the coolest parts about going to Greece (I have family there) is going to the beaches and being able to go topless. I haven't in a while, but it was cool.....except when you're 6 or something like that, walking around without your little pink bikini top on, and walking by a couple of FUGLY people getting their feel on with each other.

ick...nevermind
