Producers announced in February that they were still planning to bring the three-year-old London stage show, "Jerry Springer, The Opera" to America in early 2006, despite increasingly vituperative protests of religious groups. The show features "Jerry" mediating confessions in Hell between Satan, God, Jesus, Mary, and various Biblical characters, complete with a raucous audience periodically chanting "Jer-ree! Jer-ree!" Reportedly, 300 to several thousand curse words are in the script (depending on who counts), and the show's Jesus is a pudgy, diaper-wearing gay man who is apparently coprophilic (among the many alleged points of blasphemy). When the BBC televised a showing, it reported 50,000 complaints, with some physical threats directed to the station's staff and their families.

No...

but I miss when theatre was a little more serious.

Not that I don't love our irreverent muppets, and chair throwign klansmen...

but remember Les Miserables and The Crucible?

I think they should bring it to America on principle. HOWEVER, I wouldn't watch that filth. I'm not religious and I don't know if Jesus was the Messiah or anything like that.. HOWEVER what is up with bashing Jesus? Ugh.

the focus of the show isn't (i believe - i havent seen it myself) bashing jesus but is actaully an ironic view of television confessionals......

reserve judgement until you've seen it!

they recieved over 50,000 complaints, most of which i believe before it was shown with the whole thing orchestrated by evangelical groups and 'family rights' campaigners. so the vast majority who complained had not even seen the show................

I was really looking forward to seeing it as I had heard that it was wonderful but I really didn't like it, It was depressing and foul, the swearing was tooo much, and I just didn't enjoy it, The singing was good!My son saw it at the theatre love and loved it.
It could have been very funny but it went too far.

I kind of thought it would go that way.

Was it really opera, or was it like musical theatre-y?

That's hilarious. A little irreverance is good for the system. All beliefs systems, political and religious, do better when challenged from time to time. Complacency breeds only disaster.
Besides, there's a difference between being malicious and mischievous. I think this is the latter as opposed to the former.

You know what looks like a great show? Spam-a-lot. It's based (but NOT exactly like) Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's a pity most reviewers are too stupid to remember what Monty Python was all about. But the New Yorker seemed to love it.
