Clara Blandick - actress (Auntie Em in The Wizard of Oz)
1962 --- sleeping pills, with a plastic bag tied over her head. She was 81-years-old and suffering from crippling arthritis.

America's obsession with "preserving life at all costs" means that a lot of people suffer unecessarily. It makes me really mad.

Believe it or not, it reminds me of animal euthanasia. We put pets down when we recognize that keeping them alive for our own selfish reasons is wrong. I think the same selfish reasons apply to humans in suffering.
It's like: "So what if Grandpa's in acute pain and is hooked up to so many machines that he can never leave his bed? So what if he's miserable? So what if he's already made his peace and is ready to pass on? We're not ready."

Exactly. It's so sad. And selfish. My mom made me promise never to do that with her. And I won't.
