Mistress of the Media [Dec. 13th, 2010|11:00 am]
[mood |ear cloggy]
[music |the toilet flushing]

Before they were stars game show moments:

Nell Gwynn, a new mistress of King Charles II (1600s) , was presented with a coach which used to belong to someone else. When Nell was insulted in her coach at Oxford by the mob calling her "a Catholic whore", after mistaking her for the Duchess of Portsmouth, she looked out of the window and said, with her usual good humor, 'Pray, good people, be civil; I am the Protestant whore.' This laconic speech drew upon her the favor of the populace, and Nell was suffered to proceed without further molestation.

That wouldn't work for Madonna though, because she's Catholic.

You mean the icon? I just thought it'd be fun to use, hadn't used it in awhile. ;)

Otherwise Madonna the singer? Is she? I thought she was all new age spirituality now.

Oops, sorry, no. I meant Madonna the singer couldn't get crowds to leave her alone by claiming to be the Protestant whore.

AHAHA! I think I love Nell Gwynn now. The mistresses are always so compelling, aren't they?

Seriously! And after reading some more about him and her and his other mistresses from this triggering curiosity about them, I am even further in love with her. She was way rad!!!
