In the sky there is a pattern of stars called the Great Bear, or Ursa Major. A Micmac story tells how, in late spring, the bear wakes from it's long sleep. It is chased by seven hunters disguised as stars. In summer they chase it across the Northern Horizon. In fall, there are only three hunters left. They shoot their arrows and hit the bear. The bear rears up on its hind feet and eventually falls on it's back. Its blood drips down to Earth and paints the leaves red. In winter, the skeleton of the bear lies on its back in teh sky. But the bears spirit enters another bear. The next spring, this other bear sets off across the sky. And on and on.
