The centuries old practice of plowing farm fields, which has fallen from favor in recent years, is not only time consuming but also harmful to the environment. Research by Boston College’s Geology and Geophysics Department has determined that plowing releases 41 percent more carbon into the atmosphere than no-till farming. Carbon, incorporated into greenhouse gases, contributes to global warming. No-till farming also produces 15 percent more food on the same acreage then conventional farming, which is important for feeding a growing world population.

( Interesting. I know squat about farming, so I had no idea.)

And how to vote!

Also, if anyone wants to discuss the candidates, and the U.S. election, by all means, post here. It’s coming up. And I love a healthy debate. No attacks, or I’ll kick ya arse. :)

the only thing I have to say is that my fellow Democrats seem a little too hopeful. I know the obvious choice is Obama, but we should never underestimate the stupidity of our fellow Americans.

(Is that an attack?)

No, just a sad fact, actually. *sigh*
(And I'm not even a Democrat...)

There's actually some debate about the no-till - different studies say different things about the production aspect of it. You also have to worry about soilborne fungi that can overwinter in some places, still being there when you plant the following spring or winter. Plus, it's sort of hard to get some farmers still to believe the carbon part (though I'm sure if there's a carbon credit exchange that starts up, they'll be glad to take part if the shares sell for enough to offset their costs of not tilling).

Goodness, who knew I could actually put my job to use on LiveJournal? LOLOL

If the miracle on online information is not fooling me...

...I understand it's your birthday. Happy birthday to you - and thank you for keeping your large collection of regular readers and fans amused, entertained, educated and occasionally shocked on your behalf. I hope to rely on you to brighten my intarwebz for a long time yet!

You're pretty darn cute, too.

Now, back to the politics. From the other side of the world, I have a confession to make. I. Am. So. Damn. Addicted. To. Your. Election. We're having an election 4 days after yours, but that's mere nicotine compared to the high-quality smack of your dramas.

Without being too much of an obvious hater, I think I share with the majority of the populated planet outside the States a clear preference for one of your candidates over the other. I intend to have my Nov 5th (your 4th) off, and if the candidate who's not "That One" wins I will get mournfully drunk...
