Beauty comes at a price? [Mar. 4th, 2005|06:11 pm]
[mood |i have to go to the bathroom!]
[music |Danny Boy]

In the beauty industry an olive shade of powder is known as Rachel. The shade was named after a French tragic actress who was famous for her natural facial color. Sadly, her unique skin tone resulted from tuberculosis, which killed her in 1858 at the age of thirty-seven.

TB or not TB, that is the question. ;-)

Well, it sounds like the color itself was pretty.. probably one of the few appealing things about tuberculosis. I imagine though if it were not appealing, people that would want to look like they had it would be those playing characters with it in film, tv, or theatre..

Besides, don't you get super thin with tb?

Isn't that what the world's all about these days? I mean look at the Academy Awards.

Have you ever had to have a TB test? It's weird. They inject this stuff under your skin on either one of your forearms, then you have to come back two days later to have them see if your arm hasn't turned a bright red, or maybe fallen off or something.

I had to have one when I began volunteering at the local hospital

I did. I was sick as hell, and the Doc decided to do that first, before checking for mono.

It was mono.

For some reason that reminds me of how members of the French court in the days of the king would bleed themselves so their skin had a milky pallor. The things that humans do to their bodies in the name of "beauty."

Man. I shoulda been a French noblewoman. They woulda thought I was hot. *grin*

And you're right, people will do ANYTHING to be considered their society's proscribed idea of beauty.

i hate in moulin rouge when she coughs... and then dies. i cry -every- -single- -time-. hehe.

this one time i was sitting at my brothers and my brother's (davey) girlfriend's (becca) nephew (seth) was there. he was about 4 or 5 at the time and still wet the bed frequently. my brother was on the phone with seth's mom and seth was sitting on the floor. all of a sudden, too much steam from becca's shower got out of the bathroom and set off the smoke detector. seth jumped up, started running around in circles and screamed at the top of his lungs, "I GOTTA PEEEEEEEEE!" now of course seth didn't head for the bathroom. he just kept running around in circles, screaming. so my brother, not used to small children, yelled, "then GO to the bathroom, seth!!!" seth was so scared by all of the noise that he sat down and peed the carpet. after that, the smoke detector stopped and seth skipped out the door to play outside like nothing had happened.
that is my "pee story".
