[music |A Very Merry Unbirthday - Alice In Wonderland]

Pope Stephen VI ordered that the body of his predecessor Pope Formosus be removed from its tomb and brought to the papal court for judgement [court trail]. (He had been dead 9 months prior to his body being put on the stand.) Because the body was in no state to speak for itself, an interpreter was assigned to stand next to the body to answer on behalf of Formosus.
Formosus was accused of violating canon law, perjury, and of serving as a bishop while actually a layman. Stephen had the body stripped of its papal vestments, cut off the three fingers of his right hand used for blessings, and declared all of his acts and ordinations (including his ordination of Stephen VI as bishop of Anagni) invalid. The body was finally interred in a graveyard for foreigners, only to be dug up once again, tied to weights, and cast into the Tiber. A fisherman later pulled the body from the Tiber to give it a proper burial.

And... Charles Manson freaks me out. I didn't realize there was a musical aspect to his crazy either. Strange.

Wow, a post of double insanity! I thought that each Pope was infallible?

I'm simultaneously fascinated and repulsed by the Manson murders story, but I'd much rather read about it, because Manson makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He's one crazy mother.

What is it about religion that makes people think they can just make up the rules as they go along? :P

So how does one become an interpreter for the dead? Do you have to speak fluent Ouija?

After hearing some of Manson's recordings, it's easy to see why he never hit it big as a musician -- I imagine it's similar to Hitler not getting into art school.

Hmmm...I've heard it explained that the Pope is infallible only when he's making a specific decision about a specific doctrine. Apparently they rarely ever cite this "power" of infallibility, and the church mainly just uses it to say that "ok, he's the boss, whatever he says is the final decsion." Kind of the Supreme Court of Catholicism, I guess.

The Church has all kinds of bazaar things in its history. There was a time when there was more then one Pope. I don't remember if it was 2 or 3. I'm kinda surprised that the Popes dvisers actually let him go through with a trial though. Putting dead people on trial sets a bad precedents. Now a days I doubt a Pope would get away with doing something that crazy.
