The U.S. nickname "Uncle Sam" was derived from "Uncle Sam" Wilson, a meat inspector in Troy, New York. During the War of 1812, Wilson's "U.S." stamped on meat barrels prepared for the U.S. Army was interpreted by some workmen to stand for their boss, Uncle Sam, and the legend grew..
And I don't know.. I think its when he honks the horn with his butt that gets me. I'm pretty sure that's why I saved this to share. lol
It's something anyway. ;)
And really? I can't divulge if I do or not because of identity issues. Is he metaphorical too? And an icon?
Makemebad is just hilarious! His video "OmgHaterz" or something close to that is just great.
In other news: holy crap, your icon rocks.
I shall have to find it. :)
Wow, now there's a bit of trivia that I did not know. Awesome. That's being filed away for future reference or the eventual Trivial Pursuit game.
And oh Lord, that video. *snickers*
Hehe, rock on. ;) I just got home from a birthday party where we played some 80's trivial pursuit. Damn, it was brutal. Funny as hell, but brutal. It seems like a game that I should just automatically win, but apparently not. lol
And right? I don't know hwy it's so funny, but it's funny.
Actually, that's not true about Uncle Sam. There never was an actual Uncle Sam. "Uncle Sam" was simply a humorous interpretation of U.S. as in United States.
Interesting. Got it from one of my fact book thingies. Are you sure it's not a combination?
Hmm ... actually, it looks like I was mistaken. There was, indeed, a Samuel Wilson, nicknamed Uncle Sam, who supplied beef to the U.S. army during the War of 1812. While the U.S. did, indeed, stand for United States, he was probably the inspiration for interpreting it as Uncle Sam.
Incidentally, there'd been an earlier personification known as Brother Jonathon who existed side by side with Uncle Sam until around the Civil War.
Omg I fell in love with that guys videos so long ago, I have him on my subscriptions, that was the first video of his I ever saw. The butt honking, and the slow motion end always cracks me up.
LOL< okay, glad it's not just me. ;)
That was good and silly.
One thought that I had was "he's playing with the wheel with his feet and his shoes are off - it must be his Dad's car."
Why is Uncle Sam so scary looking? Is that what the real guy looked like?
(Yes I'm a librarian and could look it up myself, but am ever so lazy.)
lol, have you seen Across The Universe?
Yes. Very very much so. :)
haha that vid is pretty funny
