"Hot Cockles" was a popular game at Christmas in medieval times. It was a game in which the other players took turns in striking the blindfolded player, who in turn has to guess the name of the person delivering the blow. The game was still popular during Christmas time until the Victorian era.

Haha. I might try to add that to my families Christmas activities. That's kinda awesome.

Consensual, ritualized violence at a family gathering just seems wrong, somehow. I prefer the standard, random violence that comes after Dad and Grandpa start on their seond bottle of whiskey. When Grandpa's verbal abuse makes Grandma cry and your father chases you down the street in a drunked rage while your mother sobs over the remains of what was once her living room, then you really know its Christmas

if you watch the 1938 versions of "A Christmas Carol" (The Owen/Lockhart version), when they show Scrooge at the house with the Ghost of Christmas Present, they show Fred (Scrooge's nephew) and his fiance and friends playing "Hot Cockles". it's pretty funny actually... :P
