Seems to me this should be getting more press then it is...

DETROIT (AP) - An assistant U.S. attorney from Florida was arrested in an Internet sting operation after flying to Michigan to have sex with a 5-year-old girl, authorities said Monday.
John D.R. Atchison, 53, was arrested Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after several weeks of Internet conversations between the prosecutor and a detective posing as the mother of a 5-year-old girl, authorities say.

"There wasn't much reaction from him at all," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said. Atchison was cooperative with authorities, he said.

He was charged with using interstate communication to entice a minor to have sexual contact and traveling across state lines with the intent of engaging in illicit sexual contact. If convicted of both charges, he faces up to 40 years in prison.

According to court records, Atchison initiated an online chat Aug. 29 with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in letting men have sex with her daughter.

At one point, Atchison said: "I'm always gentle and loving; not to worry; no damage ever; no rough stuff ever ever," according to an affidavit filed in court.

Atchison, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., is a prosecutor for the U.S. attorney's office for northern Florida, based in Tallahassee. He requested a court-appointed lawyer at his hearing Monday.

My question to you... how should this bastard be punished? Feel free not to mince words.

I have a few ideas but I'd like to hear yours too.

And because I try not to make all of my entry horrific at any given time, here's some happy Ukrainian Eurovision dancing.

You don't think that he would have found a living, breathing child to do this? Even with his words about how he's "always gentle" ?

I don't think it has anything to do with faith. I think it's simple reality.

Haven't you ever been tempted into doing something you otherwise would not have done? Maybe friends drinking, smoking, doing drugs, egging a house, or any other kind of prank or something that they talked you into doing with them?

It's the same concept. These bullshit "stings" entice people to do something they otherwise never would. It's the same as kids being enticed into something they normally wouldn't do.

Not something like abusing a child.

Anyone that's willing to go so far as crossing state lines to abuse a five year old.. that's beyond fucked up. He should be behind bars for the rest of his life.

Again, as someone else stated, there was no real victim. The victim was a fictitious person.

There was a time when in order to have committed a crime, you had to have a victim. These days, we're prosecuting people based on fictitious, invented, made up characters.

Who was the victim here? No one! There was no crime committed.

And again, if he had not been enticed, and in my opinion a victim of entrapment, he never would have done this at all.

I'm just sick and god damned tired of people taking advantage of hot button issues to further their own agenda. People get so riled up over this kind of stuff that they lose all common sense and abililty to think rationally. Just look at the comments right here on your own journal. People become barbarians!

The comments on this journal entry and the way people act when it comes to events like this reminds me of two things...witch hunts in the 1600s and lynch mobs in the U.S. south in the 1950s and 1960s. It's no different! And if anyone believes it is, all they have to do is look at the comments made to this post! Replace "Let's string up that nigger" with "Cut the balls off this perverted bastard". It's the same thing!

It's not the same thing. A child rapist is a child rapist and deserves all that and more as far as I'm concerned.

I pray to god there's no "civil rights" movement for child molesters, and rapists.

If we look back on these days 60 years from now with horror at how those that abused children were persecuted, I pray I'm long dead.

Did he molest a child? No. Was there a victim? No.

The bottom line is that in the usual hysteria that occurs when a large group of people can't think straight because their emotions cloud their judgment, laws and rights are disregarded and tossed away as if they don't matter.

It happens again and again. It happened to black people in the south, witches back in the day, gay people, and people who never committed a crime yet are prosecuted as if they had.

What's next? Making criminals of those who THINK about doing something but never do? Do we ever draw a line?

It's quite clear by his own ommision that he's done this before.. he's "always gentle" etc. I am interested in seeing how this court case turns out.

I wouldn't be surprised if he admits to having done this in the past.

As it is.. i'm exhausted of the topic, so this'll be the last I post on it. All the same, thanks for the dialogue on it. I appreciate debates. :)
