Seems to me this should be getting more press then it is...
DETROIT (AP) - An assistant U.S. attorney from Florida was arrested in an Internet sting operation after flying to Michigan to have sex with a 5-year-old girl, authorities said Monday.
John D.R. Atchison, 53, was arrested Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after several weeks of Internet conversations between the prosecutor and a detective posing as the mother of a 5-year-old girl, authorities say.
"There wasn't much reaction from him at all," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said. Atchison was cooperative with authorities, he said.
He was charged with using interstate communication to entice a minor to have sexual contact and traveling across state lines with the intent of engaging in illicit sexual contact. If convicted of both charges, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
According to court records, Atchison initiated an online chat Aug. 29 with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in letting men have sex with her daughter.
At one point, Atchison said: "I'm always gentle and loving; not to worry; no damage ever; no rough stuff ever ever," according to an affidavit filed in court.
Atchison, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., is a prosecutor for the U.S. attorney's office for northern Florida, based in Tallahassee. He requested a court-appointed lawyer at his hearing Monday.

My question to you... how should this bastard be punished? Feel free not to mince words.
I have a few ideas but I'd like to hear yours too.
And because I try not to make all of my entry horrific at any given time, here's some happy Ukrainian Eurovision dancing.
it is a proven fact that our brains do not process and deal with things as an 'adult' until we are at least 18 years of age.
i think it should be across the board 18
period. a girl/boy who thinks and acts 'more mature than her/his age' still deserves the same protection.
i moved out of my house when i was 13. i was very mature but i was no where near ready to be in a relationship with an adult male, not even close.
No one is suggesting that grownups or even older teenagers having sex with 13 year olds is a good idea. Personally I think 13 year olds shouldn't be having sex with ANYONE (except themselves, maybe).
But it's ridiculous to criminalize an 18 year old high school senior for having a relationship with a 16 year old sophmore - they're both just kids as far as I'm concerned. What are young couple supposed to do when one of them turns 18? Break up?
We're talking about high school teens in relationships with other older teens here. Not middle school kids. And not teenagers being preyed on by wiley 30 year olds, either. :)
I understand and in a perfect world that would work.
Unfortunately the world isn't perfect and there has to be a guideline in the laws because there are some people out there who cannot keep their hands off kids.
I know of a case where a 19 year old was prosecuted with rape because his girlfriend was 4 days shy of 18 when they had sex.
It is horrible and wrong I know. I think the guy should have gotten community service and no record, if anything at all, but a lot of people in our world aren't advanced enough to have a case by case system. Nor would a case by case system always benefit the less fortunate. Sadly, it would make even more loop holes for wealthy or well connected people to get away with things.
I think it is awful that someone who smokes pot gets the same treatment in the court systems as someone who sells cocaine, but many would disagree with me. So until we can all learn to get along better and respect each others' views, as well as stop letting wealth ad status determine who gets justice, solid guidelines are the only way I can see.
If the sex was consensual, the guy shouldn't have gotten ANYTHING AT ALL! There are plenty of places where there ARE adjustable scales like that - and don't have laws against consensual sex between young people between the ages of 16 and 24. The UK sets age of consent at 16 and that seems to work pretty well, too.
The problem is, making an 18 or 19 year old into a sex offender interferes with the system and resources used to find REAL sex offenders and dangerous rapists. It's not just unfair and unjust, it detracks and derails from the real purpose which is protecting children.
For every prison cell holding some poor college boy that continued to date his 17 year old sweetheart is a prison cell NOT holding someone who is a real actual danger.
It's just ridiculous to criminalize young people for doing what comes naturally to them (even if it's unwise or impetuous, but that's a bit of what being young is about). It certainly doesn't help them to put them in jail and hang a label that will affect their rest of their lives. And it certainly doesn't help us protect children any better.
But then you have the whole aspect of someone who has, clinically, the mental capacity of a child in an adult body (downs syndrome, autism etc). How do we go about saying who they can and cannot sleep with?
I wish the world was civil enough to have a policy of "if everyone is consenting and no one is killing kittens" it's all good and if the world was, I would agree with you totally but, sadly,as I said there are too many people who would abuse the system.
I think we need more sex ed in the schools, more access to birth control and to make what comes naturally less taboo but that won't happen for a while for the reasons I stated above.
I think we need to stop criminalizing young adults for having sex with each other and spend the time, money and effort hunting down the perverts.
I live in Florida and this is sore point for me. They let that bastard Couey out of jail (overcrowding) and he went and killed a little girl after raping her, then they turned around and charged some poor 16 year old boy with distributing child pornography because he sent a naked picture of himself to his girlfriend. What's the sense in that?
There is none. And there's no reason we have to stand for it. What's the point in handing out leaflets and condoms if it's illegal for them to have sex?
I just don't agree with the "18" cut and dried. It would lead to big waste of time, money and effort to enforce and wouldn't really protect anyone who needs the protection.
Soo many guys I know would be in jail. LOL. I was a virgin until 18, but not if you count what Clinton was impeached for etc. hahaha. ;)
I wish it could be case to case but I know it can't because that can be subject to a lot of abuse. I'm kind of glad that the law will generally turn a blind eye when i's a 16 year old girl and 19 year old guy or whatever. Unless the parents go crazy about it.. then they have to get involved.
