At the height of its power, in 400 BC, the Greek city of Sparta had 25,000 citizens and 500,000 slaves.

but after Sparta declared all greek colonies liberated (like Bush has similiarly declared), and after the resulting 10 or years of war with Athens, there were only 3,000 Spartans left. It is VERY ironic that the first communist state that declared all to be equal had to rely on slavery to do it.

I had known that the Spartans outnumbered there slaves 10 to 1, but I did not know that they outnumbered them 20 to 1 at there height of power. It was only with their mastery of the phalnix (mispelled I think) formation that they were able to keep so many slaves in check.

For more information please read Thucycidides's Pelopensian War

I'll check it out. I'm surprised there wasn't a revolt with THAT many slaves.

Given the choice to have slaves or not, you would have slaves?

that kinda reminds me of the civil war..

like the south had like 9 million people...but one third of that were slaves.

not quite liek the greeks, but it just reminded me

From my understanding the Greeks were a lot better to their slaves then the American slaveholders were.

If I recall their slaves were treated quite well, to the point where we probably wouldn't call them slaves today. We'd call them the 'working class.'

[insert social inequality rant here]

Think about it!

Their slaves were people they had captured from various war-like forays into the surroundng areas...

I want slaves... the good kind, though. The kind that do easy things i can't find time for, or am too lazy to do.... And then they can be my cuddle-slaves! And i'd cuddle them and cuddle them and they'd become like a big stuffed-animal that breathes and stuff..... but they'd have fun! And i'd be nice... ;) And i'd feed them and give them a nice place to stay... they'd be like my friends, only they'd have to listen to me.

Slavery, no matter how it comes about is always wrong. It is no ones place to "own" another person.

*snerks* Silly Spartans, with their phalanx fighting system. That was their downfall, most definitely.

And didn't slaves (back then) get their freedom at somepoint? Either buying it or working a set amount of time.. I could be completely offbase, but it seems vaguely familiar to me.

I want slaves, but I would be pretty decent to them. Never any whippings and stuff, unless we are both up to that kind of behavior in the bedroom. ;-)

I know I'm up to some whipping in the bedroom. At least some binding. But I wouldn't be if I was REALLY a slave, I don't think.
