WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Women who get cosmetic breast implants are nearly three times as likely to commit suicide as other women, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.
The study, published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery, reinforces several others that have shown women who have breast enlargements have higher suicide risks.

Loren Lipworth of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee and colleagues followed up on 3,527 Swedish women who had cosmetic breast implant surgery between 1n 965 and 1993. They looked at death certificates to analyze causes of death among women with breast implants.

Only 24 of the women had committed suicide after an average of 19 years, but this worked out to triple the risk compared to the average population, they reported. Doctors who perform cosmetic breast surgery may want to monitor patients closely or screen them for suicide risk, Lipworth said.

"The increased risk of suicide was not apparent until 10 years after implantation," the researchers wrote.

Lipworth said she believes that some women who get implants may have psychiatric problems to start with, perhaps linked with lower self-esteem or body image disorders.

"I think we don't even know how big of a problem it is because we cannot even pinpoint what proportion of women have psychiatric disorders," Lipworth said in a telephone interview.

"There could be a whole lot of different disorders."

Women with breast implants also had a tripled risk of death from alcohol and drug use.

"Thus, at least 38 deaths (22 percent of all deaths) in this implant cohort were associated with suicide, psychological disorders and/or drug and alcohol abuse/dependence," the researchers wrote.

NO RISE IN CANCER DEATH RISK

They found no increase in the risk of death from cancer, including breast cancer. Women with implants were more likely to die from lung cancer and respiratory diseases, such as emphysema, but this is probably because they were more likely to smoke, the researchers said.

Last year, Canadian scientists also found a higher risk of suicide among women who got breast implants, although they had lower rates of other diseases, including cancer.

In November, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration okayed the sale of silicone breast implants for the first time in 14 years, after years of hearings on their safety.

The FDA said independent research over the past decade has found no convincing evidence that breast implants were associated with connective tissue diseases or cancer.

While silicone implants were banned, women could only use saline-filled breast implants. Plastic surgeons say women prefer the silicone ones, and Lipworth said most of the women in her study had silicone implants.

In 2006, 383,886 U.S. women had breast augmentation, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. It was the second-most common surgical cosmetic procedure, after liposuction.

One more reason to believe that women who get breast implants and/or are otherwise overly conscious about their appearance have psychological problems and should spend their money on a good psychotherapist rather than on unnecessary operations and overpriced cosmetics.

There's a lot to be said about that, but in the society we live in I think it's almost impossible for a woman to get thru unscathed.

Wow. You've gotta wonder -- is it just that they have such low self esteem, such stressful lives, they feel such peer pressure, that they get breast implants and they just happen to be depressed and despairing? Or is there some chemical side effect inducing depression/despair? I'll be interested in the results of studies on cause and effect.

I think there are a lot of factors weighing in to it. It's a mess, no matter if it's because of chemical changes, depression, or anything else that might be part of it. So sad. :(

dude, a friend of mine just posted that surgery article on myspace - she's always wanted to get tons of cosmetic surgery.

but i figure, if a woman who gets a boob job commits suicide, its not because of the boob job. But who thought up this study? wow, women who aren't happy with their bodies might be suicidal? its good they spent all that money on med school to figure that out ;-)

My younger sister is contemplating implants because one breast is way, way smaller than the other one. She's always felt very self-conscious about it, too. Like marguerlucy wrote, I think it's more of the underlying image problems that cause the suicides.

(When I've finished losing weight, I might get my boobs lifted so they aren't hanging to my belly button! Of course, that's a big 'might' since I no likey serious pain. ;P)

See that's a little different too though, I think to get breast implants if your breasts are not the same size or after a masectomy or something is much different then "I want bigger boobies!"

that's interesting. low self-esteem doesn't surprise me, but i wouldn't have imagined it went as far as suicide rates. sad.

It's not the implants. It's the person.

Also, the supposed link between implants and various ailments has been proven to be false. There is no difference statistically in women with implants and women without them.

That being said, I'll take a natural B cup over a fake C, D, or any size cup.

It Ain't All the Women's Fault

No one has considered whether or not the women could have become suicidal BECAUSE of the implants.

The fact of the matter is, women who get implants are very likely to experience complications. There are untold numbers of women who are experiencing complications so severe that they lead to multiple operations, chronic illness and disfigurement. These women can’t work, are pushed to bankruptcy as they struggle to pay for treatment, and their families fall apart from the stress. Of all these women, some are bound to become suicidally depressed. Read more here (http://beautyandthebreast.org/?p=52).

Incidentally, that studied was paid for by Dow Corning.

Re: It Ain't All the Women's Fault

VERY interesting! Thank you so much for posting! I figured there had to be a lot of problems with the actual implants themselves too.

they do it because they're obviously already unhappy trying to pay their way into the sex kitten mould.
i really wish people would just embrace who THEY are. not what other people want them to be/look like.
but we're all taught as children, subliminally, to want to be just like everyone else.....

some people are just not as strong as others....

Exactly. I wish it was as easy as recognizing it as a trend and our society making something better of it, instead of embracing these destructive, and expensive behaviours.
