CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- "Bubba" Ludwig can't walk, talk or open the refrigerator door -- but he does have his very own Illinois gun permit.

The 10-month-old, whose given name is Howard David Ludwig, was issued a firearm owner's identification card after his father, Howard Ludwig, paid the $5 fee and filled out the application, not expecting to actually get one.

The card lists the baby's height (2 feet, 3 inches), weight (20 pounds) and has a scribble where the signature should be. (Watch Bubba use his gun permit as a teething ring )

With some exceptions, the cards are required of any Illinois residents purchasing or possessing firearms or ammunition within the state. There are no age restrictions on the cards, an official said.

Illinois State Police oversee the application process. Their purpose, said Lt. Scott Compton, is to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, those under an order of protection and those convicted of domestic violence.

"Does a 10-month-old need a FOID card? No, but there are no restrictions under the act regarding age of applicants," he said.

Ludwig, 30, of Chicago, applied for the card after his own father bought Bubba a 12-gauge Beretta shotgun as a gift. The weapon will probably be kept at Ludwig's father's house until the boy is at least 14.

That's just weird.
And that's in reference to both the article and the video.

Bubba's dad, is a writer for the local newspaper in my area The Daily Southtown. He was interviewed about this and he did it to point out the flaws in getting an FOP (firearms operational permit??) in a state that is known for having strict gun laws!!!

Makes you think... if a baby get one....why not some psycho or terrorist?

*nod* I think they're more about cross referencing to make sure your name and social and what not don't come upas being someone with a felony, right?

Thank god for that shark

Oh, yes, of course the gun is for little baby Bubba. I can't tell you how many birthdays I received guns "that you'll get when you're older". To this day, I've only ever seen one of them again. Its the father/son equivalent of the guy giving his wife a bowling ball.

i want a gun permit. Just to have.

My oldest brother collects guns. The middle brother collects guns and knives. I collect swords. We're whitetrash and ready for a zombie outbreak/crazy civil war.

Or to join the militia.

Ha! Dancing ferret is sublimely silly!

I don't know about you, but I like to keep a few deer rifles tucked away for those last-minute christening invites. Tie up a box of buckshot in pink or blue lace, and there you have it.

i think that who cares? the government has no right in anyone's personal gun collection. if a family wants to raise their child to respect guns, even at such a young age, i don't think there is anything wrong with that.

like i said, they should stop making laws to restrict our rights. it is bullshit. i don't want criminals getting their hands on weapons, but i am not willing to forgo my rights to guard off a "what-if" that is how things like the patriot act get passed. they say if you aren't guilty, you have nothing to worry about, but these are my rights, our rights, and i don't want them revoked.

if they haven't commited a crime, they aren't guilty.
