In France over 30,000 werewolf cases were tried between 1520 and 1630.
That's a lot of lycanthropy for one country. But why did they need a trial? Seems to me all you'd have to do is tie the defendant up really well and wait for a moonlit night. If he changes, guilty. If not, innocent.
But then the ancient French legal system was very, very odd. They actually tried animals they same way they tried people. There was a movie about it, but I forget the title. I did find this though...http://abc.net.au/animals/program4/factsheet1.htm
Well, that would be the ideal way to try it, but that's far to easy.
Same thing with the "witches" that were tied to blocks of heavy things and thrown into the water.. if you float you're a witch.. otherwise you drown and die.. and then... you're not a witch, but you're dead?
