Where the Hell is Matt? An oldie, but I like it. :)

Josephine Baker was only fifteen when she made her New York singing and dancing debut in 1921 in the all-black revue Shuffle Along. After 504 perfomances she emigrated to Paris to escape the racism of the United States.Baker achieved instant fame as huge crowds rushed to see her nude stage show called La Rebue Negre; to keep the momentum going, she also starred in the Folies Bergere wearing nothing but a G-string of bananas. By 1926, she had her own nightclub, impressing much of Paris with her beauty and grace. Becoming a French citizen in 1937, she worked tirelessly for the French Army during World War II and later for the NAACP to help end racial prejudice in the United Sates. In her later years, she adopted twelve children of all races, dubbing them her “rainbow tribe”.

Man, she's an interesting lady, I looked her up on wikipedia:

She was so well-known and popular that even the Nazis, who occupied France during World War II were hesitant to cause her harm. In turn, this allowed Baker to show her loyalty to her adopted country by participating in the Underground. After the war, Baker was awarded the Croix de Guerre for her underground activity.

I wonder if there's any good documentaries about her out. Hmm.

I didn't look very hard, but I did find this HBO movie that was made in 1991.

The Josephine Baker Story

You can watch the trailer there too. It looks cheesy, but it might be interesting. I'm not sure if you use Netflix, but they carry it. :)

You said it. And I'll bet no one else ever wore bananas so well. :)
