I don't think I've ever said this stream of words before, but I hope they killed themselves first! [Nov. 18th, 2006|01:04 am]

[music |80's music]

In 1844, in Lajore, India, the death of Raja Suchet Singh led to one of the greatest mass suicides of all time. When the Raja died, age old Hindu custom decreed that his widows be cremated with their husbands. The Raja had 10 wives and 300 concubines, and all of them sacrificed themselves on funeral pyres to be burnt along with their deceased husband.

And... not nearly as horrifying:

Not sure which would be worse, actually.

Well, for me definitely being burned alive.

Pretty sure this is a new one.

I know I've said one like what Maudelynn mentioned above about drinking the fluids of dead husbands in wine... This one was new to me though. If you can find it, I'd love to see where I did this before, because HydeRandom must have posted it because JekyllRandom didn't know about it. ;)

Very sad stuff. *nod*

Thank God I was born in this time and place

actually, I think the custom calls for them to jump onto his funeral pyre, thus they're very alive at the time.
Think how terrified you'd be if you were the 310 one to jump!
Great, now my head is full of morbid ideas such as some must have been friends and jumped holding hands..all the tears and hugging each other.
The idiots around them thinking they were crying for their beloved man when really their crying in terror and helplessness. If they didn't jump willingly, I'm sure they would have been thrown on.

Re: Thank God I was born in this time and place

That's the whole thing. Custom is custom. *shudder* I would have drank poison, or stabbed myself SO quickly over jumping into flames. Hell no. That's like my worst nightmare.

Thanks for all the personal imagery. ;)
