[mood |crazycrazy]
[music |Not the Brightest girl to ever grace tv.]

Mental disorders were common in the hat trade of the 14th century. This was due tot eh effects of mercurial nitrate which was used in treating felt. For example: Robert Crab of Chesham became eccentric and gave all he ownedto the poor. Lewis Carroll popularized this phenmenon by featuring a Mad Hatter in his Alice in Wonderland, which was written in 1865.

which is why i love to say mad as a hatter!
i went to high school with a kind of dim kid who broke open a shitload of thermometers in lab and drank the mercury to impress his friends.

yeah, he's in an asylum now.

That is awesome. I have never heard of that before. I wonder what people thought made Hatters a little crazy. It isn't like they could have known at the time that it was the chemical that was doing it.

That's a good point. *nod* I'm sure that's how things were all the time back then, you know? Liek crazies left and right, and no particular reason anyone could figure out .

And your icon inspired me. Was she ever Alice? She would have been wonderful!

A very merry unbirthday to you

I used to love playing with mercury drops in highschool chemistry class. They said it was toxic, but I figured that only applied to others. Then I grew that tail...

Re: A very merry unbirthday to you

And you!

And lol! Nice. ;)

Did you actually get to play with mercury in chemistry class?

I think this is happening in the baseball cap trade today. So many young peoples minds have been terribly affected, and they no longer know how to put their hats on straight.

Happy Birthday, BTW (yeah, it was yesterday, but I'm late for everything).

That's SO cool! My science classes never taught anything like that. Never the historical context of things or interesting tidbits.

I think I actually would have cared if they had. lol
