We're all mad here...

Mental disorders were common in the hat trade of the 14th century. This was due tot eh effects of mercurial nitrate which was used in treating felt. For example: Robert Crab of Chesham became eccentric and gave all he ownedto the poor. Lewis Carroll popularized this phenmenon by featuring a Mad Hatter in his Alice in Wonderland, which was written in 1865.
