Romantics may believe that Rose Street in Edinburgh was named after the wild roses on the slopes above the North Loch (now Waverley Station). But Rose Street is commonly used to describe red-light districts of European towns, and to "pluck a rose" was a common euphemism for picking up a prostitute.
