In the eighteenth century, patients in the insane asylum of the Hospital of St. Mary of Bethlehem in London were placed in cages and exhibited to curious onlookers like animals at a zoo. A popular afternoon’s entertainment consisted of visiting the inmates of this institution and taunting them with sticks, rocks and burning missiles. It is from the name of this asylum, commonly called “Bethlehem” that the word “bedlam” is derived.
