"The term "nuclear family" was coined by anthropologist George Murdock in 1949. It was the height of the nuclear era and the early days of what would become the Cold War. Murdock saw in atom the appropriate metaphor for heterosexual, married parents and their children, which were considered the foundation of society and a powerful means of reproducing the population.
