“ You should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.” The bottled water industry loves this myth, but according to kidney specialist Dr. Heinz Valtin, there is no scientfic evidence to support the claim.

I doubt many people actually drink 8, 8-ounce glasses of water a day...plus drinking too much is bad for you.

Yeah, but 'too much' is something along the lines of over 20 8-ounces glasses in a day, which is very unlikely.

And no, most people don't drink their 8 glasses a day. They have sugary soft drink instead, or eat something deep-fried.

Mmm... Are you sure on your numbers there? I was under the impression that a number of Doctors have recently put out information saying that many (Americans. Not trying to be USCentric) are drinking too much water, and that the 8+ glasses of water a day rule was a thing of the past because of it..

I think in metric so my numbers may be a tad off.

I think it seems to be the majority are either in the too much or not enough catagory with only a minority actually around the reccomended mark, so that it averages out but individually... certainly here it's young people (late teens to early 30's) who are drinking their 2 to 3 litres a day, while the older generation tend to drink tea or similar as the majority of their beverage consumption, and since it's a diuretic...

Actually, you need to drink a lot more than 20 'cups' to die. Its closer to 8 gallons in a day.

I read a news article a few years ago about how soldiers in Iraq (it did not specify which 'war' it meant) drank HUGE amounts of water (+8 gallons) a day to avoid dehydration. The result was their brain swelled up, they slipped into a coma (sp?), and died. The article said is was something about differences in salt concentrations. *shrugs*

The amount that you need to drink a day is mainly dependent on your weight. Pregnancy, ambient temperature, humidity, exercise, diarrhea, and health concerns can raise the requirements. The base is: [weight(lbs) x 16] / 240 mL = # of 8oz cups per day

If you google hard enough, you can find sites that let you calculate it. I posted a comment about this in the past here
.

I didn't mean die, I meant once you go over 6 litres a day is when it starts to give you ill effects as that volume of water puts stress your kidneys and begins to leech good nutrients from your body.

You are welcome. :- )

Unfortunately, due to weight gained during a long bout of depression (still hear actually), my base amount is over 18 cups of fluid a day. Then, living in SE Florida and being a human heater (sometimes sweat in 60F), I should drink even more.

Most days I only drink about 5-12 cups of ANY fluid.

It sure can be. Infact, people can die from it. It's a rarely used form of suicide, if my sources are correct.

I rmeember drinking at least that much though when I was on oneof those diet kicks that said whenever you're hungry just drink water.. and so I drank A LOT of water.
