Superstition offers us a number of explanations for the appearance of birthmarks in the newborn, usually blaming them on some shock or evil influence to which the mother has been exposed during pregnancy. ( Though this is now discredited). In some cultures birthmarks are considered lucky, the mark of God, while in others they are attributed to the influence of the Devil and expectant mothers are advised to sprinkle themselves with black pepper to ensure their baby is not disfigured in this way. It is believed in some quarters that birthmarks will vanish if licked regularly by the mother in the baby’s early weeks ( A contention that is, extraordinarily enough, backed by science in certain limited circumstances.) In the USA, babies who are born with a “double” birthmark on the head are expected to travel widely and divide their lives between two continents.

Interesting! When I was seven in Germany, I knew a girl who had a large dark brown pigmentation on half her face. She was five or six, but had already been born in America and gone to Germany with her parents. I only knew her for a year, and I never kept in touch with anyone I met as a child. What is a "double" birthmark on the head anyway? I'll probably find out in a moment when I read the other comments, unless no one has said. I have certainly traveled, but I have no birthmarks.

I wonder how saliva makes a birthmark go away. Going to read now..

I wasn't born with any marks, but I do have many childhood scars, even some infancy scars (horrible stories). I think they show that whether or not God or the Devil have entered my life in any way, someone definitely cursed someone in my family and decided to say, "and curse the next (however many) generations too." Ahh, I suck at life too, (like devious_runaway), because here I am, doing well, happy, and talking about shit years gone by. I do think I may very well have been cursed though. I like the fact that I get happy sometimes though! Hey, I've been BLESSED too, in a lot of ways! Yep, here I am in the middle of a happy period, not sleeping, and for the first time ever, Not getting sick from the lack of sleep! BLESSING! Only one of them.

Did you find out anything in your reading?

I really don't know any more then what I posted, and that's just what I got from the superstition dictionary. *shrug*
