*blink* Licked? [May. 8th, 2006|11:05 am]

Superstition offers us a number of explanations for the appearance of birthmarks in the newborn, usually blaming them on some shock or evil influence to which the mother has been exposed during pregnancy. ( Though this is now discredited). In some cultures birthmarks are considered lucky, the mark of God, while in others they are attributed to the influence of the Devil and expectant mothers are advised to sprinkle themselves with black pepper to ensure their baby is not disfigured in this way. It is believed in some quarters that birthmarks will vanish if licked regularly by the mother in the baby’s early weeks ( A contention that is, extraordinarily enough, backed by science in certain limited circumstances.) In the USA, babies who are born with a “double” birthmark on the head are expected to travel widely and divide their lives between two continents.

You know, I never really thought about birthmarks before. I have one on my left temple, but its very tiny. Apart from superstition explanations, what actually causes them?

I really don't know! I just got this from this cool superstition encyclopedia that I got at a thrift store. I need to go to work right after I finish checking these emails, but I'll try and remember to google search it when I get home. In the meantime, anyone else up to looking into it? :)

I noticed googleismygood deleted their lj, at least temporarily... :( So... I don't think they'll be able to help, alas.

I wanna know what the 'limited circumstances' in which 'scientifically' licking works to remove the birthmark.

Wow, my cousin has a birthmark on her forehead in the shape of an "X" (I would assume this is kind of a double birthmark) and she actually does travel a lot and travels between California and Spain, living in both places.

odd.

wow...i found that really interesting because i have a red birthmark on my neck that's a little larger than a quarter, and not quite circular.

my parents thought about having it removed when i was about four years old, but i told them no, that it was a part of who i was and i wanted to keep it.

Exactly!! If a birthmark or defect doesn't effect your life (I had a friend whose daughter had eleven toes when she was born, and so she wouldn't have problems finding shoes, they had it removed in surgery) I totally understand keeping it. Makes sense to me. I have a few little bigger then freckle (but just slightly) birthmarks on my body, but most are hidden by clothing... so only a few hundred people have seen them.

( LOL. JK. ;) )

I don't have a birthmark, but have always wondered what it would feel like to have one.

I was going to say no one in my family has a birthmark. However, my older sister has one that started on her hip. I'm not sure where it is located now. /shrug/
