As a side note on volcanoes, scientists think that the loudest noise ever heard by mankind was the explosion of Krakatau.
An explanation of the starvation depends both on the land affected directly by the volcano and also on the effect of the explosion on the Earth's atmosphere. Not only were much of the good farmlands destroyed, the dust cloud would have caused summers to be shorted and cooler, affecting crops all over the world. At least, so it is said in my geology class. ^^ Make of it what you will.

Why do they think that the Krakatau explosion was louder then others?

And ooh! Interesting. I wish that the bookw ould have said more about if it was a long term thing, or how long they considered the volcano and it's effects for in the number of dead.

You know, I'm not sure. it could be based some on reports of it being heard from some far-flung places, but I've never seen the process used to come up with it. It would be interesting to know.... I do it was heard all over that area - they have reports in journals and papers.
