And yet we've been told that since we were kids. Sad. I thought it was just the sound of air rushing through the shell and your ear.
I find this equally hard to believe. I think it's magic!
Could be. What are facts anyway? ;)
I was doubly deceived!!!
really? i have always heard it was the air rushing through the shell
good to know
I posted an inaccurate fact, apparently.
Check out pete23's link.
no wonder no one believes any of my posts.
Dude! That was from The Red Sea, wasn't it?
When I put my ear to the seashell I heard the numbers:
Do you think that there are sea shells of every colour?
Those bastards! Do you mean to tell me that I've been lied to my entire life?
Yes. Even now, you're being lied to by me. I liedto you. But I didn't mean too.
You've discovered my master plan to decieve you! I thought I'd finally defeated you by making you believe you could really hear the ocean!!!
Eww that's gross. I'll never put a shell to my ear again. You've ruined it all for me :p
Ah now I read the other comments. Ah well.

Don't believe it. Honestly, that's only one side of the debate. Personally I believe in the theory of Intelligent Seashell Noise. The sound you hear when you hold a shell to your ear is just to complex to be the result of random echos.
I just got it out of a fact book. It was a fact book from the 80's though, so it's likely to have false information.
Would everyone like to throw rotten tomatoes at me now?
I've always wondered about that, actually. Because you can put other things to your ear and it sounds the same. And yes, I've read the link in the comments.
Antithesis of yay: I was wrong about the shell thing. I posted old information.
