Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), one of the great French sculptors was allowed to freeze to death by the French government even though it knew of his plight and could have saved him. Rodin, forgotten in the last year of his life, was refused financial aid several times by the French state, even while the statues he had donated to the country were kept warmly housed in museums. In the winter of 1917 Rodin’s application for a room in one of these museums was rejected, and a month later he died in a garret from frostbite.

True that. Not respected much more now, I'm afraid. I find it interesting how many artists have died in poverty, because there art wasn't appreciated except for posthumously.. or were just allowed to fall into squalor because they had run out their usefulness.

You know, a lot of other people died of exposure in 1917, too. A lot of them in this country.

However, I bet a lot more people died as a result of the world war that was going on.

Not a good way to go.

Still I'd rather die of frostbite then of a fire.

My first reaction was very cynical and related to that old idea of how art's value can change: maybe they didn't want to help him, because his art was worth more with him dead than with him alive. It's far more likely that it was the same kind of thing that happens all the time now, all over Europe. People fall through the cracks.

What is it called when someone carved rock and makes busts of people? I think that is really cool, I want to bring that back in style.

That's called classical sculpture. It's dead, more dead than album rock.
