The first food boycott in history was organized by abolitionists against sugar because its harvesting was done by slaves. By forging sugar or by purchasing sugar from the East Indies (which did not use slaves), the Anti-Saccharite Society claimed that eight families that each typically used five pounds of sugar a week would over the course of twenty years, prevent the slavery or murder of one hundred people. One supporter of the boycott was Mrs. B. Henderson, a businesswoman in London who sold sugar basins wiht cold letters that proclaimed “East India sugar not made by slaves.”

How would she know if it was still East India and not made by slaves? Did she go over and investigate to make sure? Cause I'm pretty sure that if East India was known for slaves, then they wouldn't all of a sudden change their ways.

I don't believe that East India was known for having slavery.. it says in the paragraph that they didn't.

The first ever boycott of anything was made in Ireland, by a group of peasants against the local officer, Captain James Boycott, which is where the name comes from. He was an Irishman working for the British, I believe, but the peasants rebelled against him by simply refusing to pay their taxes to him in a perfectly non-violent way. Or something like that.

They probably picked it to be able to survive... to pay the taxes that they had to pay to the British on their land - that Kiwioverture pointed out.
