Prior to the introduction of the potato, beer was second only to bread as the main source of nourishment for most central and northern Europeans. The average English family in the latter half of the seventeenth century, including children, drank three liters of beer per person per day. Breakfast usually consisted of beer soup, which was made from hot beer, butter and a couple of eggs whisked together and poured over a roll or hunk of bread.

The beer was, unfortunately, very low in alcohol content, and oh so much safer than the water. That said, I would much rather picture a group of drunken children tending animals in the street.

I'm not a beer person either. Though I did see an AWESOME pair of Guiness PJ pants the other day and bought them for a Guinessy friend. I think I'd pass out if I took more then a t-spoon.
