In this re-imagined narrative, Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's an example of transformative storytelling serving as a pro-feminist visual critique of Edward's character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy's eyes, some of the more sexist gender roles and patriarchal Hollywood themes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed - in hilarious ways. Ultimately this remix is about more than a decisive showdown between the slayer and the sparkly vampire. It also doubles as a metaphor for the ongoing battle between two opposing visions of gender roles in the 21ist century.

Hope you're all doing well. Hoping to return to full time soon, but sticking with randomly for the time being. :)

that was an awesome video. I never thought about the feminist issues in it before, but it definitely highlights the iffy behavior of one Edward Cullen. I, for my part, didn't enjoy Twilight, and even though I'm not a fan of Buffy either (I just can't dig Vampire stuff), I did get a thrill from seeing Edward bite it haha! nice use of the hP footage.

The use of the HP footage totally rocked.

And I was always a little disturbed by Edward's behaviour in the first couple of books, and the movie, and thought this was a really cool illumination of that. I love vampires, but thought Twilight was poorly written. I far prefer the True Blood series on HBO. Think that series is poorly written too. Have never been able to finish Interview With The Vampire because the writing annoys me.. lol. Someday someone will write a vampire book that I don't either hate or just tolerate.

Haha! Loved the video! They did a really good job of syncing the two stories to make sense. I haven't seen Twilight, and I barely remember Buffy, but it definitely did a good job of showing how creepy the guy's actions really are when they're not set to romantic music... If some guy was doing that kind of stuff to me, I think I'd probably react like Buffy did, fo sho. I've had a couple of creepy stalkers before, and it was NOT a turn-on (I have to agree with Buffy on this one).

As far as exposing the gender role thing? I feel stuck in the middle of that all the time, so this clip exposes the inward tension I feel on almost a daily basis. I was raised in the city, in a fairly liberal school where feminist ideals were not only taken for granted, they were celebrated. Then I went to college at one of the most conservative schools in the country, and had the exact opposite: the ideals of domesticity and woman's highest calling being raising her children and taking care of her home were not only assumed, but celebrated and expected from all women. I personally ended up in a weird place in the middle and am still trying to figure out where on that spectrum my own personal beliefs and expectations lie.

I think a lot depends on what the social expectations of your surroundings are. I think most people, to some degree, bend to fit the gender expectations of the community they live in, even if only a little. They'll at least be affected by it, for sure.

i think the problems come when people are forced into roles they don't fit or don't want to take on. i am a stay-at-home mother of one, and it fits me. but someone else might want to have a job or something to get a different kind of fulfillment out of life. that is okay with them.

i mean, that is what is so great about living now. we have that freedom to choose between all sorts of facets of life. no one hole is right for every woman, or for that matter, person.

do what you want. :nods:

Good to see you, doll! Did you see the post to my journal about one of my "experiences"? I was thinking of you when I did it.

Oh Buffy - how I miss you!! I thought the vid was awesome. I'm not a Twilight fan so Edward Cullen being staked was totally cool with me. I'm a TB fan now that I have no Buffy/Angel fix. I'd love to see more Buffy/Twilight mashups - social commentary or just gratuitous stakings!

BTW - what's the credit on the pic?

No, I haven't! I don't know if I'll ever catch up with all the posts I've missed. I'll find it though now that you've mentioned it. I hope it was a good experience?

It was a pretty awesome combination. :) And I loooove True blood!!!

And I don't know, wish I did. It was here: http://ffffound.com/

I find a lot of the stuff I post here there.

uhm. it's, like, a remix of two dodgy vampire series. dude.

it's not like it's simone de beauvoir or gertrude stein or germaine greer exactly, is it.

lol, no. Not exactly.

But you don't think there's a difference between the tone of the two? I think maybe you needed to watch Twilight to see just how different the characters of Bella and Buffy are.

I am so happy to see you. I don't mind long absences (whether it's you or someone else), I just get worried when they get too long. I am paranoid that way ;)
