V-Day! :)

In Denmark, people send pressed white flowers called snowdrops to their friends. Danish men also send a type of valentine called a gaekkebrev (joking letter). The sender writes a rhyme but does not sign his name. Instead, he signs the valentine with dots, one dot for each letter of his name. If the woman who gets it guesses his name, he rewards her with an Easter egg on Easter. Some people in Great Britain also send valentines signed with dots.

And Ice Skating Bloopers.. because really.. who doesn't love those? ;)

I hope you all have a lovely Valentines Day. I heart you all. :)

In Japan, women give men chocolate.

The reverse will be true on...White Day, I think?

Whoops, looks like White Day is the month-later male equivalent of Japan, where women DO give men chocolate on Valentine's Day.

Interesting!! I find it fascinating that they have this "third" rule. THanks for the info, I'd never heard of it!

There's also Tanabata, on July 7, which is a more traditional romantic holiday.

happy hallmark day. i really don't like valentine's day, 1. because i'm lonely and have been single for a long time, and 2. because i think that if you love someone, you should show them every day of the year, not just on feb. 14th. i hope you have a good one though. i am protesting and spending the day with good friends.

I totally understand that feeling, and have been single enough times on Valentines day to remember how crappy it can be, but it's alwas better shared with wonderful friends. :)

An Easter Egg?! Not very romantic. Honestly, things would be so much easier if foreigners just did things the we do here in America.

And I always feel bad for those ice skaters. YOu know they nailed those moves a million times in practice, but the one time it matters they fall on their ass.

LOL. Yes, wouln't the world be SOOO much better if it was more America'ized. ;)

I know! But in a reel of allof them put together, it's kinda funny. You laughed, admit it. ;)

And to you my dear!!

I didn't post the NSAD part because I didn't want to irritate any of my single LJ'rs that wouldn't find it as grin-worthy as I always did for all the V-Days I spent single.

just to be swotty

there are seven diferent saint valentines and very little is known about any of them. none of which are venerated in the catholic tradition as established at vatican 2. all those called saint valentine predate the tudor establishment of the anglican faith which did retain the veneration of saints but was swiftly decried as heresy by subsiquent tudor rulers, as your reference to henry VII sugests. where he did establish it in anglican law the date was preceeded in cannon law
the valentine whose feast day is february 14th is valentine of terni. the association of him with romantic love was first made by geoffrey chaucer in the 'parialment of fowles'.
relics, being bones, of valentine of terni are intered in white friar street church in dublin(the other half are in terni), just beside my flat. every february 14th they dip them in the holy water to give healing powers to all that touch them.

for the record, im an atheist. as you may see from the fact in my journal today
