300 Stalkers.. eep! [Nov. 21st, 2007|11:40 am]

Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person's name and address.  If you then hit Map, you will get a map to the person's house!  It's a nationwide reverse telephone book.

If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked.  I tried my number and it came up along with the mapquest and directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to Google, http://www.google.com/  Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging  your private information; simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours

Old trick. I occasionally use it to freak less tech savvy friends out.

That makes me nervous.

Like... it could be helpful, if it was just your friends er whatever.... but..... bad things could come outta that.

I tried this for friends and it worked. I tried for myself and it didn't. The difference is that my phone number has never been listed to begin with.

Once again my paranoia serves in my favor.

Holy shit. Shouldn't they have to ask permission first? This is ridiculous. And how did they get our private information without our consent? That should be illegal.

I think if it's listed in a telephone book, it's available, but I mean it's something to live in the area and look someone up, but something else entirely to look them up online.

Hard for me to get worked up about this

since it's all been publically availble on the Internet for years before Google Maps.

This is not right. However, if you are listed in the phone book, that information is also in there. Now I need to get my name out of the phonoe book too!

THANK YOU for this tidbit. I am going to repost on my LJ as well (with credit to you).

It's the same thing as a reverse search on 411.ca, only quicker to get to. This stuff isn't new! I dunno though, I don't really feel like I have anything to be worried about. If someone wanted my info they could find it in a zillion ways... but I can't think of any reason I should be afraid of people knowing where I live.

Dad's phone no. returns his location. Mine doesn't. We live about four blocks away. Odd.

Now see, this is exactly why my father keeps his number unlisted and I have a cell phone that doesn't show up anyway.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you're not on to something.

I can see why you would be bothered, but really, its only made the process a little bit more user friendly. I've called 411 with a phone number before and gotten the address, and you can reverse phone-book a phone number on several of the yellow page sites.

I always use my cell phone number on lost cards and luggage tags (instead of my whole address!) for that exact reason, but all in all, it doesn't really bother me. Good info tho, I passed it along to others! If nothing else, just being aware of it is as important as deciding whether to stay listed or not.

Incidentally, I am not listed on any of my numbers, but I use Vonnage and cells.

Video had me cracking up!

Our number is unlisted and has been for eons, so it didn't work for me. I'm starting to understand that if someone really wants to find information about me, they can, but that doesn't mean that it's not weird to have it so readily accessible like that.
