Sooo, this is amazing.

LJ is offering out gift certificates for $30 to use for this charity called http:www.donorschoose.org . You get to pick what the 30 bucks goes for. There's stuff there for music, art, books, computers.. everything as I understand it. The thirty dollars is free from sixapart to you. All you need to do is email : donorschoose@sixapart.com . They will send you a certificate in an email with a code to enter on the website, and use $30 toward any of the endeavors there. If you feel so inclined you can add your own money as well. :) Up to you o' course. Apparently all projects that are submitted are done so by teachers, requesting things that they need for their classrooms to help kids.

I did some quick math... and i know tons of people on my friendslist are inactive but IF every one of my LJ friends decided to do this, we would together raise approximately $18,000 for various charitable causes.

I know a lot of people on LJ have been upset with the different changes and policies, and this and that going on in Livejournal. All the same... I think this is an amazing opportunity for us to have some say where this money goes, and who will be helped by it I know it's tax deductible for six apart, etc, but as far as i'm concerned it's the coolest thing they've ever offered.

One downfall.. it's only going to help US kids, but you can request a certificate regardless and use it. There's information on how to enter your country code in the comments of the LJ_biz entry. ( And I promise if I ever have the opportunity to do something like this for kids in your country, I will. )

Now these are available only until MONDAY Oct 1 at 5 PM PT, so get your request in now!! They'll take 24-48 for you to receive the email with your code. Still waiting for mine, too. :)

Please please please set aside whatever differences you have with LJ to do this, and pimp it out to everyone on your journals if you feel so inclined. I think it's a wonderful way to make a difference. I'm really excited. :)

If you decide to do it, if you want to leave a comment, that would rock. Let everyone know what project you chose for your $30 gift (that you didn't have to pay anything for.. ;) ) to go too!

You guys rock. I can't wait to hear the response. :)

I will never trust SixApart to do anything right ever again. I'm sure they'll find a way to fuck this up too.

I understand your feelings on this.. but $30 to go toward a good cause? You just don't feel comfortable being involved at all?

I'm definitely going to check this out and then post it on my LJ, because with my extensive friends list, we could raise...*counts on fingers*...at least $90 or $120. Woo!

Thanks for passing this along.

Thanks for the heads up! Such a shame they sort of buried the offer and such as shame there is so much resistance to givign away someone else's money, but I've requested and will spread the word.

Hey, I'm always up for giving away other peoples money. I'm in. I just find it a bit odd that this is the first I've heard about it.
Thanks for posting about this!
I'll most definitely pass it on.

Re: awesome

Thanks love! :) I appreciate it!

I think it's strange they didn't post it in news.. but they don't have to give out as much this way. That's why I'm pimping it left and right.

This is the one I chose. :)

teach at a inner-city school for middle school students. My school has about 85% rate of students who are below the poverty level. Many of the students in my school live in dysfunctional households with some living in shelters or group homes. They receive only the basic necessities for living and nothing extra.

I teach 85 students per day as a middle school social studies teacher. I have always dreamed about a classroom library in which I can choose a book from a particular historical era and help them relate to the time period. I would like single copies to use as an introductory piece to a time period and class copies of novels that I would like my students to read. This library could be used yearly and I could share it with the other social studies teachers in my department. I feel my children would benefit by reading high interest material and working on reading comprehension skills which they need to the end of grade testing in our state.

I would like to purchase a set of 30 hardcover novels over a five year period. This proposal requests two of those titles. I would like to begin with, "Roll of Thunder" and "Hear My Cry". I would like the teaching guides by the author, as well.

I will have 85 students participating and two other teachers have eighth grade social studies classes. We could switch out the different novels for the classes. I am the departmental chairperson and I want this for my children who enjoy reading and can not purchase books or have means to obtain books. Reading is an essential tool to have any type of economic success in the world today. Reading is the basis for academic success in in classroom and so many students grow into adults who have reading comprehension problems.

My project needs 85 copies of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and 1 set of the book on compact Discs for auditory learners and/or non-English speaking students and students reading below grade level. The cost of this proposal is $922, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment.

What a great idea! I loved the concept of the DonorsChoose site, and with so many choises I was amazed at the creativity of these teachers!

I donated my gift certificate to "Knuffle Bunnies and Talking Pigeons" - a class project to use cameras to take pictures of the local area, then draw in imaginary friends of each student as part of a story that they write.

I am about to pester my husband into doing one as well. Thanks for posting! I would have never known about this otherwise!

That's so awesome! Please post on your journal if you like, because it's getting close to the cut off time. :) The more people that see this the better, I think.
